What to Wear Under Your Wedding Dress

Strapless, sweetheart, or straight across

What usually works: A longline or full-bodice foundation that sits low at the neckline and holds through the underbust and ribcage. Soft cups alone rarely give enough lift for a strapless evening of dancing.

Watch-outs: High-cut strapless bras that show at the sweetheart edge. Sticky cups that migrate. Shapewear bands that sit right at the bust line and create a shelf under the fabric.

Plunge or deep V

What usually works: Separation and a deep center, often a plunge-friendly bra or a longline with a low front. The goal is lift without a bridge of fabric across the V.

Watch-outs: Full-coverage cups that fill the plunge. Sticky cups that leave a gap at center front. Doubling a plunge bra with a high-waisted shapewear piece that rides up into the V.

Low back or illusion back

What usually works: A back cut designed for low and illusion backs, so the band and any hooks sit below the visible fabric line, or stay hidden under illusion mesh.

Watch-outs: Standard bra backs that show through sheer tulle. Convertible straps that still leave hardware at the wrong height. Stacking a longline under a heavily boned low-back gown without checking where both finish.

Mermaid or fitted through the torso

What usually works: Full-bodice hold (lift plus a smooth line from underbust through the waist) so the dress does not fight a soft under layer. A longline corset bra is often the tool here when the gown itself is not heavily structured.

Soft A-line with built-in cups

What usually works: Sometimes the dress already does enough. Built-in cups plus a simple brief or soft slip can be all you need if the neckline stays put and you feel supported.

Watch-outs: Adding a structured bra "just in case" when the cups already sit correctly. Extra layers can show or shift. Skipping a fit-check entirely; built-in cups vary by size and maker.

If the bodice is soft and you need more lift than the cups give, add one structured piece, not a stack.

White vs Ivory vs Nude: choose for the fabric

Color under a wedding dress is about show-through against the gown fabric, not matching the invitation suite.

• White - often pairs with bright white and cool-toned fabrics.
• Ivory - often softer against warm ivory, cream, and champagne tones.
• Nude - often the quietest under sheer illusion, lace, or skin-tone-adjacent layers; choose a nude close to your skin, not a generic "nude."

Fit and size without guessing

Fit starts with two measurements: underbust and full bust. Use those against the size chart on size and care. Do not treat chart midpoints as a promise of perfect fit without checking.
